Regulations for the 11th Klaudia Taev Competition (2019)

The registration for the competition will be open from 1st of December 2018 to singers of all nationalities, male singers born after May 21st, 1985 and female singers after May 21st, 1988. 

The Competition will be held in five rounds:

1. To apply for participation in the FIRST ROUND, there are two options available (A and B):

A)  LIVE AUDITION (recommended)
The application deadline for live auditions is 10 days before the chosen audition date:

Applicants must perform with piano accompaniment two pieces (at least one of them operatic aria) of differing character
The contestant may choose the pieces, which can (but not necessarily) be from the same repertoire chosen for later rounds.
NB! The entire duration of performing time may not exceed 10 minutes.

B)  AUDITION BY VIDEO RECORDING or YOUTUBE LINK (less chance to be selected than by using A option) -
The deadline for video recordings is March 21st, 2019:

  • Recordings must contain at least two pieces (at least one of them operatic aria) of differing character. 
    The contestant may choose the pieces, which can (but not necessarily) be from the same repertoire chosen for later rounds.
  • Titles of works and date of recording must be indicated!
  • Two recordings must be at least 6 minutes in total length.

At least 36 singers will be selected and proceed to the next round. Results will be announced before April 8th, 2019 by e-mail, on the website of the Competition and in Facebook.

The selected contestants (both A and B options) must confirm their continued participation in Pärnu in the next rounds of the Competition by April 21st, 2019. Every selected contestant receives a questionnaire with extra information, which should be returned in time!


2. In the SECOND ROUND at least 36 chosen contestants will participate. They will perform two pieces with piano accompaniment, namely:

  • one short (four minutes or less) 18th century aria (from Bach to Mozart inclusive) chosen by the contestant. The piece may not be one of the arias designated for any of next rounds.
  • one short (four minutes or less) opera or operetta aria (also arietta, arioso, couplets etc.). The piece may not be one of the arias designated for any of next rounds.

NB! The entire duration of both pieces together, including stage entrance and exit, may not exceed 9 minutes!

3. In the THIRD ROUND  a maximum of 26 contestants will take part. They will perform two pieces with piano accompaniment, namely:

  • two verses (couplets) of Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria" sung in German. Transpositions are allowed.
  • one Lied, classical romance or folk song chosen by the contestant.

NB! The entire duration of both pieces together, including stage entrance and exit, may not exceed 8 minutes!

4. In the FOURTH ROUND a maximum of 16 contestants will take part. They will perform two pieces with piano accompaniment, namely:

  • one aria or selection from any opera, oratorio, cantata or orchestral work composed after 1935.
  • one operatic aria including extensive recitative (scene).

      These works may not be among of the works designated for the second and the final rounds.

NB! The entire duration of both pieces together, including stage entrance and exit, may not exceed 13 minutes!

5. For the FINAL ROUND a maximum of six contestants will be chosen. They will perform with orchestra two arias from the repertoire list, namely:

  • one aria chosen by the contestant
  • one aria selected by the Jury out of the three options previously presented by the contestant. The selection will be announced to each finalist after the fourth round.

The contestant will be allowed a 25-minute rehearsal with the orchestra before the final round.


ACCOMPANISTS 

The use of an accompanist for the audition in the First round costs 15-25 EUR. Accompanist is provided FREE of charge for up to 20 minutes preparation for the 2nd and 3rd rounds, and up to 30 minutes for the 4th round. Extra rehearsal time (also for final round) can be arranged by personal agreement with an accompanist for 1 EUR per minute. Participants themselves must provide the accompanist with all music needed (be ready to send the scores by email directly to pianists at least 2 weeks before the competition).

Participants are allowed to bring their own pianist. 

Additional Conditions

The contestants must perform from memory. Once chosen, pieces cannot be changed after the official booklet of the Competition is printed. Exceptionally, it is possible to change works only with the consent of the majority of the jury.

The Jury reserves the right to make any decisions not otherwise addressed in the official regulations, in order to ensure that the competition proceeds in a fair, efficient and orderly fashion. All decisions of the Jury are final.

All selected from the 1st round contestants must be in Pärnu, Estonia on May 21st for the drawing of lots which will determine the order of singers in the second round. The exact time and place of the drawing will be announced beforehand.

If the contestant does not comply with the regulations of the competition, then he/she may be disqualified.

Contestants are responsible for obtaining their visas to enter Estonia. 

It is highly recommended that contestants provide their own insurance with adequate coverage. The Competition will not accept any responsibility for accidents occurring to contestants during the competition.

All participants must cover accommodation and traveling expenses by themselves. Our team will provide a list of hotels/hostels/guesthouses in Pärnu offering a special price (only for the competition participants). 

All rounds of the competition will be open to the public and may be recorded and broadcast by radio or television. Contestants have no monetary claims on interviews, recordings and broadcasts. Also all the rounds will be video recorded (or live broadcasted) by the Competition and these recordings will be posted public on the website of the Competition. The contestants are not entitled to charge fees for these recordings or to prohibit their public presentation up to 1 month after the end of the Competition. In exceptional cases, the contestant may file an official request to remove the video and in convincing circumstances the organizers may allow it.

The organizers guarantee that the audio recordings sent by contestants for the 1st round will not be used for any other purposes except the selection of candidates for the second round.

We recommend to be dressed respectfully to the audience. For the Finals, Ladies: evening dress and Gentlemen: suit/tuxedo/tailcoat.
