Friends of PromFest have the opportunity to get to know the renowned mezzo-soprano, Vesselina Kasarova (Bulgaria), the chairwoman of the jury of the XIII Klaudia Taev Competition.
Kasarova is one of the most important and versatile singers of our time. She owes her world career not only to her phenomenal voice, but also to her charismatic personality. Although spoiled by success, she has repeatedly reflected critically on the singing profession. She is an artist who not only has something to tell, but has something to say.
Kasarova was born in Stara Zagora (Bulgaria). After receiving her piano concert diploma, she studied singing at the Sofia Academy of Music and performed major roles at the National Opera there while still a student. In 1989, a permanent contract brought her to the Zurich Opera House, where she quickly became an audience favourite and was hailed as a great discovery by international experts. In 1991 Vesselina Kasarova made her debut at the Salzburg Festival as Annio in La Clemenza di Tito conducted by Sir Colin Davis. Other roles at the Salzburg Festival included Tancredi, Ombra Felice, Zerlina, Farnace, Sesto, and Marguerite (La damnation de Faust). In the autumn of the same year, Vesselina Kasarova made her highly acclaimed debut at the Vienna State Opera as Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia) under Donald Runnicles. She has appeared at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Opernhaus Zürich, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper München, Opéra National de Paris (Bastille, Garnier), Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, in Amsterdam as well as at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.
Kasarova will also conduct a three-day master class for young singers. For Vesselina Kasarova, intensive collaboration with singers means supplementing and improving experience and knowledge. She is not only interested in technical and stylistic skills, but also in strengthening the students’ self-confidence and preparing them comprehensively for the stage. NB! An audience can follow the masterclass of the renowned soprano and vocal master pedagogue for free!
