has performed the great dramatic soprano roles of grand opera in prestigious opera houses around the world, including La Scala and New York’s Metropolitan. She has sung with such famed tenor as Placido Domingo and under the baton of legendary maestro such as Lorin Maazel.
Ms. DeVol was born in Northern California. As a music student at San Francisco State, she earned her tuition by singing in the San Francisco Opera Chorus. From 1973 to 1984, she continued voice studies while serving as Assistant General Manager of Oakland, California’s historic Paramount Theatre.
A stunning, statuesque blond, with a powerful voice, she was a perfect choice for dramatic operas. Consequently, she headed to Europe and, from 1984 to 1990, was a principal soloist in German opera ensembles, first in Aachen then in Mannheim. Her reputation and talent established, she became an independent artist with a spectacular global career. Her debut at La Scala was as FIDELIO under the baton of Lorin Maazel. Renowned for her roles in the operas of Richard Wagner, particularly that of Bruennhilde, she was named “Singer of the Year” twice by the German language OPERNWELT (Opera World) magazine. In 2006, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in Wagner’s LOHENGRIN singing the role of Ortrud. She sang the title role in the premier of SUSAN B. ANTHONY, MOTHER OF US ALL with the San Francisco Opera. Other notable appearances included the title role of ELEKTRA in Buenos Aires and the performance of Bruennhilde’s Immolation Scene from Wagner’s GOETTERDAEMMERUNG in Abu Dhabi with the Bayreuth Festival ensemble under the baton of Christian Thielemann.
Ms. DeVol joined the faculty of University of Nevada Las Vegas in the fall of 2008, where she taught voice and opera workshops. Retiring from the stage in 2013, she was invited to work with the newly founded La Voce Totale, a summer program for young singers in the Las Vegas area. In addition, she currently gives Master Classes internationally, maintains a private voice studio, and serves on the Panel of Experts for the New York-based “Career Bridges” for aspiring singers. She has been appointed to lead the American Wagner Project, a program of the Institute for Young Dramatic Voices, and works with the Richard Wagner Society of Washington, D.C. in presenting Master Classes and Concerts. She is also an adjucator/judge of voice competitions both in the U.S. and abroad.
Since 2014, Ms. DeVol was tapped to lead Opera Las Vegas where she currently maintains her home. She also serves as Vice-President on the Board.
